“Stop and Smell the Flowers”
This award-winning image was taken by QuadPhoto photographer David Hermann. The insect taking time to smell the flowers is actually jewelry: a hand-painted porcelain pin. The flowers are real Gerber daisies, a species native to southern Africa, Madagascar and Indonesia that offer vibrant shades of red, pink, orange and yellow. David lit the scene to bring out the flowers' rich colors and achieve good color saturation. David shot the photo using a 120mm telephoto lens with an extender from five or six feet away. Using the long lens up close provided the limited depth of field he sought.
